bite the bullet, to
Definition
To brace oneself against pain or a difficult experience.
Origins and History
This expression is believed to have emerged from the grim days when battlefield surgery was performed without anesthesia. Soldiers would bite on a lead bullet to help them endure pain. This historical use is reflected in Rudyard Kipling’s The Light That Failed (1891): “Bite on the bullet, old man, and don’t let them think you’re afraid.”
However, there is an alternative theory that suggests the term evolved from the practice where gunners would bite off the end of a paper-tube cartridge to expose the powder before igniting it.
