boonies, the 🌲
Definition: The provinces, a remote rural area. This slangy term is an abbreviation of boondocks, a word rooted in the Tagalog language of the Philippines, where “bundok” means “hill” or “mountain.”
Origin
The term originated with U.S. Marines during the Spanish-American War (1899–1902) who adopted it to describe the rough hill country in the Philippines. The word gained further traction with American troops during World War II, who then abbreviated it to “boonies.” Upon returning from war, it slipped into civilian vernacular, synonymous with “the sticks.”
Interestingly enough, W.C. Handy wrote in “Father of the Blues” (1957), capturing the spirit of the term when he said, “I continued playing for dances, touring on the road and through the sticks.”
