🚫 As Dull as Dishwater: Adventures with Hackneyed Phrases 🚿
Definition:
When someone or something is as unexciting as watching paint dry—or in this case, as dull as dishwater—they are downright boring. This cliché conjures up imagery of scummy, grayish water that dishes have been washed in, a perfect metaphor for something lackluster.
Origins:
Flat, boring—this expression began life in the eighteenth century as “dull as ditchwater,” alluding to the muddy color of the water in roadside gullies. “He’d be sharper than a serpent’s tooth, if he wasn’t as dull as ditchwater,” observes Dickens’s character Fanny Cleaver in Oliver Twist. This version survived on both sides of the Atlantic well into the twentieth century. Either through careless pronunciation or a similar analogy, it occasionally morphed into “dishwater”—water in which dishes had been washed, making it equally uninspiring.
