🐱 Fat Cat
A wealthy individual. This rhyming term, originating in America around 1920, once had a more specific meaning related to politics. Initially, it referred to wealthy donors who made large contributions to political parties or campaigns. Over time, it broadened to encompass any wealthy person and any individual who has become lazy or smug due to material assets. For example, the Saturday Review of Literature in 1949 mentioned “Hollywood celebrities, literary fat cats.” More recently, the New York Times headlined a column “In the New Populism Add the Government to the List of ‘Fat Cats’” (June 17, 2010).
