🎯 Give It Your Best Shot
To try one’s hardest; to expend optimum effort. We’ve all had those moments where we’ve got to summon every ounce of determination and aim for success. Originally a military term, best shot in the sixteenth century denoted the soldiers who could most accurately shoot the enemy, according to William Safire. It seems fitting considering the high stakes!
However, the word shot didn’t just hang around with a bunch of soldiers; by the mid-eighteenth century, it also meant an attempt or a try, leading to some confusion about its precise origins. Hey, who wouldn’t wonder where razzing phrases like these come from!
Even billiards and boxing like to claim their pieces of the etymological pie. Could it have been about the sharpshooter soldier or the pool shark lining up a perfect angle? Why not both! Either way, by the twentieth century, “give it your best shot” had turned political, with candidates everywhere hurling their utmost efforts into their campaigns.
Fiction writers couldn’t resist incorporating the phrase into their nail-biting narratives. David Baldacci used it in Hour Game (2004):
“‘If you can wake them up…’ —‘We’ll give it our best shot,’ said King.”
