Got Up on the Wrong Side of the Bed
๐ Definition:
“In a moody, grumpy state of mind.” This expression dates back to ancient times when it was believed to be extremely bad luck to put the left foot down first. Supposedly, Augustus Caesar, the Roman emperor, was exceedingly superstitious about this practice, and it was regarded as a bad omen in the seventeenth century.
๐ค Did You Know?
By the 19th century, this superstition trickled into everyday language and became a sign of churlishness and ill temper. As Sir Walter Scott put it, โThou art angry this morning . . . hath risen from thy wrong side, I think" (Redgauntlet, 1824).
