✋ Hands Are Tied, My/One’s 🙌
Definition:
To say one’s “hands are tied” means to be unable to act freely due to constraints or limitations. Essentially, one’s ability to take action or make decisions is hindered, much like having one’s hands literally bound.
Example: “I’d love to help you with the project, but my hands are tied by company policies.”
Origins:
The metaphor became popular in the mid-seventeenth century. An early appearance in print was in Thomas Fuller’s “The Holy State and the Profane State” (1642): “When God intends a nation shall be beaten, He ties their hands behind them.” Not exactly a cozy visual, but hey, it’s vivid!
