Hold the Fort, To
Definition: To keep things going until further support arrives.
This phrase originated from a literal military order given by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman in 1864 during the American Civil War. He instructed Gen. John M. Corse at Allatoona to hold the position against enemy forces, saying, “Hold the fort at all costs, for I am coming.” Although Sherman’s exact words were “Hold out, relief is coming,” somehow “fort” became firmly planted in our idiomatic garden, a testament to human creativity and shifting memories. That catchy command made its way into a gospel song by Philip Paul Bliss, and the rest, as they say, is history!
