💥 Going Off the Deep End
Definition
To overreact; to let one’s emotions carry one away. The “deep end” presumably refers to the deep water at the end of a swimming pool, which is risky to enter unless one is a proficient swimmer. The term became current in the early twentieth century.
Origins
The phrase originated in the early 20th century. Kathleen Knight’s “Rendezvous with the Past” (1940) featured the line: “There’s no reason for your going off the deep end,” illustrating how it was used to chastise someone exhibiting extreme emotional reactions.
