🎼 Running the Gamut: From A to Z and Everything in Between 📚
Definition: To extend over the entire range.
Origins
The phrase “running the gamut” finds its roots in medieval music theory. Guido of Arezzo, a Benedictine monk, created a system for learning chants and remembered musical notes. The term “gamut” is a contraction of “gamma,” the lowest note in Guido of Arezzo’s scale, and “ut,” the first note in any given scale, which was later replaced by “do.” Essentially, to run the gamut means to cover a complete range, from one end of the spectrum to the other.
Famous Usage
One of the most biting and witty uses of this phrase comes from the famously caustic Dorothy Parker. Regarding Katharine Hepburn’s performance in the 1933 Broadway play “The Lake,” she quipped, “She runs the gamut of emotions from A to B.” Ouch. That scathing review indicated that Hepburn’s emotional range was… let’s say, extremely limited.
