Seventh Heaven, to be in
To be in seventh heaven - To be in a state of sheer bliss. Both the Muslims and ancient Jews recognized seven heavens, linked to the seven planets, with the highest being the divine residence of God and top-ranking angels. By the nineteenth century, the term had broadened to mean ecstatic happiness, devoid of religious connotation.
Sir Walter Scott provided a vivid depiction in “St. Ronan’s Well” (1824): “He looked upon himself as approaching to seventh heaven.”
