Status Symbol
Status Symbol - A possession or privilege that is a mark of one’s social standing. Originating from the mid-twentieth century, this term is often used sarcastically, poking fun at those who chase material possessions to achieve a sense of worth. For example, in a New York Times article dated September 3, 2000, Geraldine Fabrikant humorously commented on Johnnie L. Cochran’s latest acquisition: “Mr. Cochran . . . is now hitting the major money leagues as well, and he has the status-symbol issue down pat.”
