Sum and Substance
“And now, without further ado, allow us to present the sum and substance of linguistic delights…”
Definition
Sum and substance - The total essence of a matter. The “sum” in this cliché is not really necessary- “substance” carries the meaning adequately- but the appealing alliteration is likely what helped this phrase survive the ages.
Etymology and Usage
Shakespeare wielded this phrase marvelously in Two Gentlemen of Verona (4.1), where he declares, “My riches are these poor habiliments Of which, if you should disfurnish me, you take the sum and substance that I have.” The Bard’s flourish of alliterative brilliance has eternally adorned our language with this enlightening expression.
