“In the long run, the strongest succeed.”
This phrase was coined by Herbert Spencer in Principles of Biology (1864) to describe Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection. What’s a successful cliché without a strong backstory? This particular gem has been broadened over the years to apply from evolutionary biology to the success—or demise—of corporate ventures.
The poet Sarah N. Cleghorn, however, cheekily contested in The Survival of the Fittest (1917): “‘The unfit die—the fit both live and thrive.’ Alas, who say so? They who do survive.” Clever wit with a side of poetic shade—two qualities we adore!
